1. About the SCITT Programme
Q: What is a SCITT?
A: A SCITT (School-Centred Initial Teacher Training) is a school-based training route into teaching. It provides hands-on classroom experience alongside academic study and leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Q: How is SCITT different from a university-based PGCE?
A: SCITT programme is based in schools, offering immersive, practical training with expert mentors, whereas university-based PGCEs include more time spent on academic study. Some SCITTs also offer a PGCE qualification.
Q: Do I get a PGCE with this SCITT?
A: Our SCITT offers a QTS qualification, and we also provide a PGCE in partnership with The University of Huddersfield for those who want to gain master’s-level credits and an internationally recognised qualification.
2. Entry Requirements & Eligibility
Q: What qualifications do I need to apply?
A: You need:
· A UK undergraduate degree (or equivalent).
· GCSEs at grade C/4 or above in English and Maths (and Science for Primary training).
· School experience is beneficial but not essential.
Q: Can I apply with a degree from outside the UK?
A: Yes, but you’ll need a UK ENIC statement to confirm its equivalency. Contact us for guidance.
Q: Can I apply if I don’t have the required GCSEs?
A: Some candidates may be able to take an equivalency test. Get in touch for advice.
3. The Application Process
Q: How do I apply for your SCITT?
A: Applications are made via the Department for Education (DfE) Apply service. Visit DfE Apply to get started.
Q: What happens after I submit my application?
A: We review applications, conduct interviews, and notify successful candidates within a few weeks.
Q: What can I expect in the interview?
A: The interview usually includes a short teaching activity, two unseen written tasks, a discussion about your motivation for teaching and a number of formal interview questions.
4. Funding & Financial Support
Q: How much does the training cost?
A: Tuition fees vary but are typically around £9,535. Many trainees are eligible for student loans and bursaries.
Q: Am I eligible for a bursary or scholarship?
A: Bursaries are available for certain subjects, such as Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Computing. Check the latest funding guidance on the DfE website.
Q: Can I get a student loan?
A: Yes, UK trainees can apply for a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan through Student Finance England.
5. Training & Placement
Q: How much time is spent in school versus training sessions?
A: Most of your time (around 80%) will be spent in schools, with 20% dedicated to professional development and academic sessions.
Q: Will I have a mentor during my training?
A: Yes, you will be assigned an experienced teacher as your mentor for guidance and support.
Q: Do I get to choose my placement school?
A: We match you with partner schools based on availability and your location preferences.
6. After the Course
Q: Will I be guaranteed a job after the SCITT?
A: While a job isn't guaranteed, SCITT graduates have high employability rates, and many secure roles in their placement schools.
Q: Can I teach abroad with QTS or do I need a PGCE?
A: Yes, you can teach abroad with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), though you may need additional qualifications depending on the country and school. A PGCE is a teaching qualification that's often accepted by international schools.
Q: What career progression opportunities are available after completing the SCITT?
A: Many teachers progress to leadership roles such as Head of Department, Senior Leadership, or Specialist Mentor within a few years.
